what.
Ask to create an album cover for an artist of our choice for a vinyl sleeve. We had to create multiple grid systems and use only black and white and adobe fonts in indesign. After we were allowed to add imagery and color. In an addition we were also asked to create a lyric booklet. I chose Sara Landry a techno DJ and producer so my booklet had minimal words so I took the few words and filled up the addition pages with information on Sara Landry, Berghain and Female Producers in the space.
choosing the artist.
The first step was choosing an artist to re-create an album for. I Decided on Sara Landry a dj and producer. I’ve always loved her music and I thought it would be really fun to create an album cover for a techno artist. My love for techno was something that had really progressed a lot over then last year and see so much opportunity in the event space around it.
the steps.
After choosing the artist and album we were going to redesign for we made some quick moodboards and then 5 different set of grids to use and follow. For the first you steps we could only use typography and only black and white and I think that really helped push me into creating something type focused and not getting distracted by colour and image. Having that barrier was difficult at first but it definitely help to push this creativity and making type the main focus. We had to make 15 front covers - 3 for each grid system and write a little rationale for each. I really tried to focus a lot on how I would almost visualise certain sounds in techno, or the feeling I get when dancing to a really good techno song. We chose our favourite 5 to create back covers for. Were we allowed to use color and imagery. I really wanted to keep pushing myself to keep it mainly typed based because that felt important to me and I thought would personally help develop my typography skills further as well as helped evoke this idea of a Berlin night with the black dress code and the fact you aren’t allow to take pictures. One we had chose a final album cover we had to create a lyric booklet. As I did choose an techno EP there was few words so I played with the few words in the songs and added some addition pages on who Sara Landry is and female producers to fill up some pages.
reflection.
I think this experience really helped to push my typography skills which helps a lot when doing web and app design as well as graphic design element. Looking back on it now I think I would have probably played around a bit more with the shade of green used but also the sizing and location of rebirth. Especially the RTH part as well as the titling within the booklet as well. It was one of the first typography based projects I’ve done and I think it helped me create a really good base that was lacking a bit before. I think some smaller things could have been done for improvements but overall I think it captured the EP and Sara Landry quite well.
